For the results to a study published in JAMA, women with diabetes have twice the risk of depression after childbirth than healthy women.
“Postpartum depression affects 10-12% of women who are mothers. This is a serious disorder, whose consequences are felt not only by the women themselves but also their children and family environment for a long time” – the authors of the study explain.
Previous studies have shown that patients with diabetes in general are more prone to depression. “But our study the first drew attention to the relationship of diabetes and depression in the context of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood,” – said one of the researchers Katy Backes Kozhimannil.
In the study, researchers examined data for more than 11 000 women from seeking medical attention in the Medicaid program in New Jersey from July 2004 to September 2006. The data covered a period of 6 months before giving birth to one year after childbirth. The risk of postpartum depression was twice as large in women with diabetes of any type, including gestational diabetes mellitus.
According to the authors, the main thing in this study is that it was managed to find new risk factor for depression after childbirth. This will help doctors in time to identify women at increased risk of postpartum depression, which is now often diagnosed too late and not treated effectively.
Postpartum depression is terrible that deeply depressed, desperate women in this state can go to commit suicide, harm or prevent the abuse of their newly born children. The risk of postpartum depression is increased in the presence of episodes of depression in history, women with low self-esteem, severe course of pregnancy and lack of understanding and acceptance from friends and relatives.
